Quite the Saturday

The deaths of Dr. Ruth, Richard Simmons and Shannon Doherty were overshadowed by Donald J Trump this weekend.

The recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has shaken the nation, stirring deep-seated tensions and highlighting the volatile state of our political climate. As we grapple with the implications of this event, it is crucial to reflect on it from a biblical Christian perspective, acknowledging the sovereignty of God and understanding that while God does not cause evil, He allows it to unfold within His perfect plan.

The Sovereignty of God

As Christians, we believe in a God who is sovereign over all things. This sovereignty is beautifully encapsulated in Proverbs 16:9, which states, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” The recent attempt on Donald Trump’s life, which narrowly missed him by just a few millimeters, serves as a stark reminder of God’s ultimate control over the events of our lives. While this act of evil was carried out by human hands, the preservation of Trump’s life points to a divine plan that is beyond our understanding.

A Troubled Political Climate

The political atmosphere in the United States is deeply divided, with tensions running higher than ever. The fact that such an extreme action could be taken against a former president and a presumptive nominee highlights how fractured our nation has become. This incident, along with efforts to slander, prosecute, and imprison Trump, paints a troubling picture of our current political landscape, likening it to that of a banana republic.

However, it is important to emphasize that this post is not a defense of Donald Trump’s character. As Romans 3:23 reminds us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Trump, like all of us, is flawed and in need of grace. This is not an attempt to anoint him as a savior or the antichrist but to recognize the broader implications of these events within God’s plan.

Speculation and Response

While speculation abounds regarding the motive and background of the attempted assassination—whether it was a politically motivated hit job, the act of a deranged individual, or planned by the CIA, NSA, FBI or Secret Service—our focus should be on the response to this event as things unfold over time and ultimately, justice will be sorted out by God in His perfect timing.

Going into the weekend, Trump was already leading in the polls and favored to win the upcoming presidential election, bolstered by the obvious cognitive decline of the current president. Much like the surge in popularity Ronald Reagan experienced after his assassination attempt, Trump has seen a similar boost in the polls following this incident. The stock market and Bitcoin, already optimistic about Trump’s chances, now reflect an almost assured landslide victory for not only the electoral college but the popular vote as well in November.

A Call for Unity and Love

As Americans, our response to this event should not be one of further division but of unity and love for our neighbors. It is a call to put aside the vitriol, the politics, the anger, and the hate that have come to define our interactions. In the words of Barack Obama, “We are not red states or blue states, but the United States.” Let us strive to embody this sentiment, seeking to heal the rifts in our nation and move forward together.

While the attempted assassination of Donald Trump is a deeply troubling event, it serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and the need for unity in these trying times. May we, as a nation, turn to God for guidance, seeking His will in all things and striving to love our neighbors as ourselves.
